performed by teams of 6 to 8 people, and for success it is necessary to really be “a team”. In order to complete the adventure without overturning the raft, all the team have to paddle in harmony with each other.

There are of course various difficulty levels of rafting. These difficulty levels are determined by factors such as river flow rate and abundance of rocks. The stream has to pass through various natural obstructions during passing through its bed. These obstacles intersecting the water’s path affect the rate and direction of the general flow and create turbulences, waves and sudden accelerations in the flow. In river sports, such regions displaying white and foamy views are called "Rapid".

In touristic purpose rafting cruise tours in addition to this, the canyons, valleys and other natural landscapes provide magnificent and marvellous tastes to those who perform this sports branch along with the adrenaline. For it is hard to maintain control in rapidly flowing rivers, rivers are listed according to their flow rates, in other words their difficulty scales.

Scale 1: Has very simple flow. Suitable for small, easy crossings.

Scale 2: Has low flow rate, with a steady flow. Small rocks and waves exist but is suitable for simple crossings with no hazards.

Scale 3: Average difficulty. In this scale, billowing up to one metre height may exist. Visual range is limited.
Scale 4: Very difficult large rapids exist. It is hard to estimate the beginnings and endings of falls. This is a scale full of wild crossings and difficult obstructions.

Scale 5: Extremely difficult; high flow rate, dangerous rocks, steep slopes, falls one after another, limited-progress crossings exist. These are routes not recommended for amateur rafting sportsmen/sportswomen.
Scale 6: Drops down from metres above the river, full of abundant obstructions. Their crossing is difficult or impossible even for expert rafting sportsmen/sportswomen.

With rafting becoming known throughout the country, a “Canoe and Rafting Federation” has also been founded in Turkey. In addition to this, tourism companies arranging weekday, weekend, one-day or pension rafting tours has been established. These organizations prepare rafting tours under the supervision of expert guides, and all kinds of material and guide are supplied by such organizations.

Can Anybody Perform Rafting?

For rafting do not require any specific skills or physical condition, all who wish may do this sports branch. For the first two

scales, not even swimming skills may be required, however, for a rafting session of real adrenaline, a good swimming skill is a must. And a guide to direct and inform you. So, there is no need to attend any courses for rafting. All safety measures are taught to you in a short training session prior to rafting and all required materials are provided to you. After being outfitted accordingly, you are placed in a raft and set to water according to your experience level. The guide and his/her assistant in your raft continuously direct you and assist in what to do when faced with any difficulty.

At the beginning, you do not have the opportunity to raft at every river because, as previously mentioned, rivers have various difficulty scales. For example, rafting in Çoruh River, the second most wildly flowing river in the world, is only possible for those with enough experience. However, there may be found conditions suitable for beginners in some sections where the flow decreases.

For beginners, the most suitable place within our country is seen as Köprülü Canyon. In Köprülü Canyon, the beauty adds further pleasure to the sports you perform. The only issue is to paddle correctly, one with the team you are together as mentioned before. Otherwise the balance of the raft may get disrupted and thus overturn.

As long as you have the materials necessary for rafting and the required safety precautions are met, rafting is not a dangerous sports branch. Life jacket, helmet, shoes, rescue rope and flip rope (rope used for correcting the flipped raft) are the materials that must be included for rafting.
